Day of Blessing – Walls Optional “Not Tonight”

Word of Life’s Annual Day of Blessing was once again a huge success. Workers arrived at 6am and began to prepare a hot breakfast for the homeless who would soon be arriving from downtown Tulsa. Over 50 volunteers came to prepare scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, biscuits and gravy, fresh fruit, orange juice, coffee and milk. We began with prayer at 7am and then loaded the bus and headed downtown to pick up those who wanted to come.

When they returned one of our Depot youth, Autumn Reichel, ministered in song and then Pastor Smiley Elmore, our Children’s Pastor preached the gospel and demonstrated great feats of strength.

We were able to feed and minister to 65 homeless, some even brought children. One man who has been sleeping in his car was sent back with frozen hot dogs, tuna fish and Cheerios to feed him for about a week.

Out of those who came to the breakfast three received Jesus as their Lord and Savior and seven rededicated themselves to the Lord. Encouragement and prayer was offered to others. It was a great start to the morning.

After the homeless were bused back to the downtown Tulsa day shelter the workers returned and were joined by other church volunteers for “Not Tonight” our first Walls Optional outreach of 2010. 92 volunteers participated in this outreach of which 88 distributed food on the streets of West Tulsa covering 9 square miles.

Patrick Schrepel had explained to the church that hundreds of thousands of children right here in Oklahoma go to bed hungry every night, thus the theme for our outreach “Not Tonight”. We would make a difference that night.

Our goal was to deliver one bag of groceries with all the ingredients for one spaghetti dinner. Volunteers filled hundreds of brown grocery bags with food and flyers about various ministries of our church. Afterwards they divided into groups and delivered over 500 spaghetti dinners to every home in their assigned neighborhood.

Many people would just cry when we would stop at the door because they saw that God had remembered them. The workers were able to pray with over 100 people for various needs and five received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. These people knew they had been touched by the love of God on this day.
