Walls Optional Outreach: Band of Brothers Workday

Band of Brothers was a phrase coined by the great playwright, Shakespeare in “Henry V.” When these three words are grouped in this order, it causes something to well up inside of me, and I think of words like; noble, honor and greatness. On a Sunday in November I witnessed a group of noble, honorable and great men in action.

In late October Band of Brothers , the men's ministry of Word of Life, started doing a small work day at the home of a family in need. While there, it was birthed in their hearts to do something special for this family by tearing out their old dilapidated shed, and replacing it with a new metal shed. It was also decided that the children in the family had nothing to play on in the back yard, and that needed to be remedied.

After sending out a call for help to raise the funds necessary, which came in record time, twenty-four men and teens showed up at this family's home on Sunday, November 15th ready to work. In spite of a light rain causing muddy conditions, groups of men worked hard in a spirit of camaraderie, some putting together the new swing set, others working inside the home painting the bedrooms. The back yard was transformed into a thing of beauty by pulling weeds, chopping trees and getting rid of more vines than were able to be counted. The construction of the metal shed was started.

By the end of the day Band of Brothers had emptied and torn down the old shed, completely mowed and edged the back yard, and carried off hundreds of pounds of trash, debris and foliage. They also finished building the swing set and painting the bedrooms. The highlight of the day was when the young son of this family came into the back yard and saw the swing set for him and his siblings. All the men agreed that the smile on this little boy's face made it all worthwhile.

The men of Word of Life are the cream of the crop, and I am honored to be able to serve with them in Band of Brothers. This work day was only a success because of the willingness of good men to band together for the betterment of others. It is good to be the hands and feet of Jesus to a hurting world, thanks to all who made this possible.

Strength and honor for the Kingdom and the King...Dave Felts
