With the flourish of activities going on all the time here at Word of Life it is great to see events come along that will involve children and their dads. One recent activity, which our Children’s Pastor Smiley Elmore just engaged our dad’s and their children in, was our “Father/Child Fishing Day”, on Tuesday, June 23, 2009.
During the late spring and summer, Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) hosts fishing clinics at the Zebco Casting Pond on the south end of the Oklahoma Aquarium campus. The Oklahoma Aquarium is located at 300 Aquarium Drive, Jenks, (918) 296-FISH. Participants learn about conservation, knot tying, casting, fish identification and fish for one hour. Bait and equipment provided by the ODWC and ZEBCO. Pre-Registration is required by calling (918) 299-2334. Kids 12 & under must be accompanied by an adult.
Our Father/Child Fishing Day event was a grand success with over 17 in attendance. All of the children, youth and fathers had a blast while being taught about Oklahoma fishing by the great staff of ODWC, then were able to apply what they had just learned. Smiley said, “Judging by the fruit of our labor, we all learned well.
Josiah Smith caught a 4.92 lb catfish, Smiley Elmore III caught a 4.74 lb catfish and Jacob Lewis caught a 4.26 lb catfish. Coby Roughface pulled in a large catfish as well. David Elmore, Kelby Pfarr, Brandon Mercado, Dillon Jines, Breanna, Karissa, Haley and Jacob Earnhardt all caught fish and reluctantly returned them to the pond.
Pastor Smiley wanted to extend great appreciation to all of our fathers, John Rockwood, Ryan Lewis, Wayne Smith, Jerry Roughface and Pastor Tim Earnhardt, for making this event a success.
Be sure to catch our Mother/Daughter trip to the mall on Thursday, July 2nd from 6PM – 8:30PM.
